Pet Sterilization Programs

Pet sterilization is one way to help to drop the number of unwanted pets. Only a small percentage (12%) of Shelter pets are adopted. It is up to all pet owners to be responsible for spaying or neutering their pets to prevent unwanted and unplanned litters.

We offer the following programs to encourage you to sterilize your pet:

Discount Sterilization Card: A free card which provides a discounted fee at a participating veterinarian, with the mention of the discount card (discount varies between clinics).

Spay–A–Mamma Program: Bring the Humane Society your entire litter of weaned puppies or kittens and we will take them in at no fee, and see that your momma dog is spayed at no fee to you.

Call us to discuss the best plan for you.

A.K.C. Chips Available To The Public

A.K.C. microchip identification is now available to the public. For the low cost of a $30.00 fee your personal pet can be micro chipped with this permanent identification method. Most shelters across the nation now scan stray pets for microchips. Now you can be located should your pet become lost and taken to a shelter or veterinary clinic that has a scanner. This is also proof of ownership and stays with your pet for a lifetime.

If you purchased a microchip somewhere else and have found that it was not registered with the national database PetTrac please call us and we will help you register your pet's microchip.

Pet Vaccination

Our yearly vaccination clinic is designed to give the community the opportunity to vaccinate their pets for a very small fee. Area veterinarians and assistants volunteer their time to help with this yearly event. Each year we have tripled the number of dogs and cats vaccinated.

Cruelty Investigations

Our trained and certified cruelty investigators investigate reports of cruelty and abuse in the Panhandle area. They work with law enforcement agencies to build cruelty cases for prosecution if the problem cannot be corrected otherwise. Our primary function is to educate the animal owner of the responsibilities involved in animal ownership. If this cannot be achieved, then the case is brought into the court system. Our goal is to minimize the number or animals suffering from cruelty in the Texas Panhandle. If you are concerned about ongoing animal abuse, contact your local law enforcement agency or local Humane Society office.

Foster Care Program

Amarillo-Panhandle Humane Society developed this program to save the lives of those pets that are not yet adoptable because of age or minor health concerns. These ‘special needs’ pets may only need foster care for a short time and then be ready for adoption.

During the peak of litter season, spring and summer, the number of neonatal puppies and kittens brought to our facility is alarming! Injured and sick animals are also brought in by Animal Control. Many of these animals just need minor medical attention, TLC and individual care for a short time. Although we know this program cannot save all of these animals, we know we can at least save some of them .With the help of dedicated staff and volunteers, we put this program together. The foster program saves more lives and gives people a new and exciting way to volunteer their time and efforts, while learning more about their Humane Society.

Our Program and How It Works:

Foster care volunteers provide temporary care for animals of a wide range of sizes and ages. Some animals may need fostering for only a few days while others may need months. Your efforts will help prepare the animal for adoption, but more importantly, you may be preventing these animals from being euthanized.

Common reasons for animals to be selected for fostering:

- Puppies and kittens that are less than eight weeks old or under 2 lbs.

- An animal may need treatment or special care. (Mending a broken limb, healing wounds, skin disorders, etc.)

Without foster parents like you, most of these animals would not make it into an adoption program. If you're interested in fostering a pet please contact us and we will be glad to add you to our list .
